INTRODUCTION
Our class uses a Moodle to help organize our messaging, calendar and homework. The moodle is housed on WRDSB's servers which means the information is proteAlmost every day I will post the daily activities on a calendar entry. This post is intended to help students who need to review today's work or who have been away.
All students are encouraged to check out the Moodle every day so that they gain a sense of the progress of the class. If the Moodle is not posted, they are encouraged to message me in case there is a technical glitch or I have forgotten to post important information.
A great habit for all students who bring their own devices is to check the Moodle as soon as they enter the class to see what is up for today. This digital habit is similar to walking into class and scanning the board, opening up your notebook and putting the date on your first page. I was taught these skills by my favourite grammarian teacher, Mrs. Wagner, back in the 80s. The tools have changed but the concept of getting your mind ready for learning is still the same.
AN EXCERPT FROM THE MOODLE...
THEME OF THE DAY: QUESTIONS??????
PERIOD A:
We started off the Monday with talking about the blog prompt. We answered lots of questions. A first draft is due on Thursday but I will give time in class to work on it. I stressed the importance of logging a concern through the moodle to let me know that you having trouble. It makes you look better as w
Here were some of the activities we worked on:
Learning about the Inquiry Method
The major focus of the day was asking critical questions and some tricks for doing that. We used the trick of making connections to self, to text to the world.
The class came up with FANTASTIC questions that made me so excited. I think they are FANTASTIC because they were interesting, important, complex, challenging and above all yours...not mine!
At some point I will show you the questions you first came up with in an activity in the first four weeks. You will see how different and how much better you are at asking questions when you have enough context to be interested. 50 points to every student for working so hard on this.
Tomorrow, you will practice this process of Context Building and Asking Questions without me. After that, we will work on Research Skills and Sharing.
PERIOD B:
Refocus on Reading
Up till this point you have been reading a book of your choice. For the next two weeks we are going to focus on reading newspapers and magazines in preparation for the literacy test.
During each reading session, however, I will give you a new challenge or skill to work on and think about. This will be away of testing out different reading strategies to help you accomplish your different goals of reading.
